Santralistanbul …

A fascinating discovery is the first urban-scale power plant of the Ottoman Empire which is now a museum and part of Santralistanbul.

The Silahtarağa Power Plant was installed at the mouth of the Kağıthane and Alibeyköy rivers, at the upper end of the Golden Horn, and was the sole electricity provider for Istanbul between 1914 and 1952. However, its production capacity gradually decreased and production was terminated in 1983. Since 2007 the plant has become a museum. Walking between the turbines is a very special experience and one feels almost transported to Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece Metropolishttp://vimeo.com/785823
